chongqing-china

As I get ready for Teradata Universe 2011 in ChongQing, China next week, I’m putting the finishing touches on my keynote speech.

Although I can’t share all the juicy tidbits of my address, I can tell you that I’ll be talking on the theme of the conference—“Do more with your data.”

China is in a very progressive (and aggressive) period of development. But until I started preparing for this event I had no idea how much that applied to what I call the socialization of data.

Mobile devices are exploding there which means the proliferation of location and potentially, sensor data. And social media has taken hold big time as reported by Netpop, a research company in San Francisco that found social media is twice as likely to influence Chinese buying decisions compared to Americans.

In fact, a fascinating phenomenon has emerged in China called “group purchases.” It all starts with one individual who wants to buy an item. He or she posts that desire and looks for others in the market for the same product. As the group increases in size so does its buying power.

Consider negotiating a favorable price for your next new car. Now imagine the difference in the discussion if you could bring into the deal 54 other people also wanting to buy a car at the same dealership at the same time you did. Imagine no more. It actually happened.

Finding tidbits like these has been fun but I know the best is yet to come. This event on the other side of my world will bring together some of the best and brightest minds in data warehousing…and I simply can’t wait to get there.
